2x4GB + 1x8GB or 4x4GB DDR3 RAM?

Hi,

I already have 2x4GB of DDR3 RAM and I am looking to upgrade to 16GB. My motherboard only allows DDR3 RAM. Is it better to use 3 sticks or 4 sticks in the configurations proposed in the question?
